“The Birth of Jesus,” Friend, Dec 1982,
Adapted from Scripture Stories (Matt. 1; Luke 1 and Luke 2; Hel. 14; 3 Ne. 1.)

Mary was a beautiful young woman who had been taught to believe in God and in the words of the prophets. One day the Lord sent the angel Gabriel to Mary with this message: “Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.”
Mary was troubled because she was not sure what the angel meant.
“Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God,” the angel continued.
“And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.”
Mary was still puzzled and asked the angel how she could possibly have this baby, for she was not yet married.
“With God nothing shall be impossible,” the angel answered. Then he explained that Mary’s child was to be God’s Only Begotten Son.
This was startling news, but because of Mary’s faith and humility, she believed everything the angel told her. Her heart was filled with joy. No other daughter of God had ever been so blessed. In her gentle way Mary replied, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.” Mary wanted more than anything else to do the will of her Father in Heaven.

Joseph loved Mary and wanted her to be his wife, but when he found she was going to have a baby, he decided to quietly call off their marriage.
However, the angel Gabriel visited Joseph in a dream and said, “Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.”
Joseph understood then and took Mary to be his wife. He was happy that the long-foretold coming of the Savior was at hand and that Mary, whom he loved, was to be the mother of the Savior.

A few months later, in the spring of the year, Caesar Augustus, ruler of the Roman Empire, sent out a decree that every man in the empire must return to the city of his ancestors to pay a tax. Joseph had to go to Bethlehem.

Because Mary was about to have the baby, she was very uncomfortable. The journey was long and hard for her. When she and Joseph reached Bethlehem, things were even worse. The city was so crowded with all the people who had come to pay their taxes that there was not one room left for Mary and Joseph. Every inn was full. Finally, they found shelter in a stable.
While they were staying in the stable, Mary’s baby was born, and they called Him Jesus. Straw was carefully arranged in a manger to make a bed for Him. Tenderly Mary wrapped her tiny Son in swaddling clothes (pieces of cloth for bundling a baby) and put Him in the manger. When she looked at Him, she realized what a miracle He was. She was His mother, and God was His father. Every child is a spirit child of our Heavenly Father, but Jesus was also an earthly child of God. He was the Only Begotten Son of God, and He would be able to do the important work that God had called Him to do in this life.

The night of Jesus’ birth shepherds near Bethlehem were tending their sheep. Suddenly the skies became bright, “and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.” An angel appeared to them, saying, “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
“And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.”
As the angel spoke, a multitude of the heavenly host appeared, praising God: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”
After the angels left, the shepherds hurried to see this special baby. Just as the angel had said, they found Mary and Joseph in a stable and the Babe lying in a manger. Looking down at the newborn Child, they knew He was indeed the Christ, the One who would be the Savior of all mankind.
“And when they had seen [the Babe], they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.” Then the shepherds returned to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for the wonderful things they had seen and heard. Happiness and joy filled their hearts because they had seen and could testify of the Christ.

The shepherds in Bethlehem were not the only ones who knew of the birth of Jesus. On the other side of the world, where the Nephites and Lamanites lived, Samuel, a Lamanite prophet, had told the Nephites of the signs that would appear when the Son of God was born. He had said that on that glorious occasion there would be a day, a night, and a day of continuous light and that a new star would appear.
Five years later, as Samuel had prophesied, the Nephites saw that it was still light even after the sun had gone down. They also saw a new star in the sky, and they knew that Jesus Christ was born.

I know this to be true. I know Jesus lives. I know he is my Saviour.

Well, the kids and I have been trying to convince katie for over a year to let us get a dog. She does not really like dogs and is allergic to a lot of animals so it was hard for her. Lizzie and Marlee really love dogs and hug and kiss them with ease. Below are pics of the surprise early Christmas present I received Monday, Dec. 1st 2008.

His name is "Optimus Prime" but we call him Prime. He is a 4 month old Yorkshire Terrier. He has papers and is a pure bred. He is very very nice and never barks. He sleeps through the night and loves to play and run. We LOVE him!!! He weighs 6.2 lbs and got his first puppy hair cut yesterday. In this last picture, he is asleep in Katie's lap. He is my new buddy.

So, the other day my buddy Chris asked me to go 4 wheelin with him up near vega lake in the mountains. We left early and came back late afternoon. It was awesome! We even got stuck in a huge mud hole, lol. A few hours of diggin and we were back on the trail. We started out at 4800 elevation and peaked out at over 10,100. We had GPS, that's how we knew. Very fun time. (BTW, pay no attn to the date on the pics, the camera was messed up, soz)

The Colorado River Float

Have you ever heard of "the Daily"? It is a float trip on part of the Colorado River. It starts about half way to Moab from the turn off of I-70 at Cisco and ends near Moab, UT. It is called the daily because it takes around 5-8 hours to complete.

Last weekend we took our youth group on this float. It was awesome! (Besides the swarms of Tammy beetles, hehe) We had 6 YW and 5 YM, plus us leaders. Me, Bro. Barton, Bro. Buddeke (our guide), Sis's Roberts and Krebs. We camped out the night before on the shoreline. Friday night I gave a fireside on "Hero's". It went very well. Bro. Dillon arranged for all the kids to have letters written by their parents, for them, about how they love them and think they are the heroes. It was very nice. The YW leaders took care of all our meals and they did a great job.

Saturday morning bright and early we began our journey. The river was actually quite busy. We navigated away from the other rafts and groups and started right off with a nice cooling water fight. I had so much fun! We spent the day talking, laughing, splashing, rowing, floating and at one point picking each other out of the water. Yes, at one point we got flipped and it was quite intense for about 30 seconds. Bro. Barton was actually under water "churning" for most of that time. It was quite scary, but Heavenly Father was with us. Hehe, I lost my Oakleys and my beloved lake powell hat. So sad. But in the end, everyone was fine besides some bruised shins and egos. The river can be so calm and relaxing, but we can never underestimate the power of nature and it's water.

I think that life can be the same way. We are just drifting along, relaxing and then "splash" we are hit with some rough water. IE; hardtimes or trials. If we are not prepared we could get "flipped" or get caught in the "churning" water and that can be a horrible cycle. We hit that bad wave a little crooked with our little raft. We could have avoided flipping if our boat would have been straight. We had paddles in hand and our life jackets on tight, but the raft went in crooked. Our guide, (Bro. Buddeke) warned us about the rough water. Although somewhat prepared, we didn't heed all our guides warnings and we paid the consequences for it. This time, it just meant getting a little wet.

I pray that we can stay on the staight and narrow way, that we can listen to our prophets voice, and that we can be prepared if the rough water does come. Our faith will keep us aloat in rough water. The Church is true!

The Fourth!

Well, we are home and well and I just wanted to take a second and write a lil. We had the most fantastic time in Hooper for the fourth! It was so fun and we actually had perty darn good weather.

The kids had SO much fun playing with all of their cousins and Aunts and Uncles.Sam, on the way home said that, "he would never forget Emma and Julia as long as he lives!" Sleeping in the tents went better then expected for us, minus Lizzie I guess. I enjoyed it and the kids actually slept great. BTW, Greg and Debi, I turned off the waterfall at 3am in the morning Friday night, because it started sounding like the creature from the black lagoon. I didn't know what else to do at 3am.

Playing softball was a blast, especially when I hit a triple. (This of course after popping out twice in a row to Kyle.) It was very competitive and fun. So was volleyball and swimming. Good times. I had a wonderful time playing golf also. I remember a few years ago when I said I would never go again, lol. With great instruction from Greg J this year and Kyle & JB last year, I have grown to really like golf. Including the nice company whilst playing. I wish I could golf with you guys all the time, I would love it then.

Thank you all for the stimulating conversation, family unity and genuine love. We love it when we all get together. My kids love all of you, kids and adults and that makes me feel so happy.

Crazy Weekend, (from early June)

No, our event-filled weekend

Well, Rins, I am borrowing your title for this one. Although my focus is a little diff tonight. We did have a very fun and event filled weekend to be sure.

We drove to Denver on Friday and spent a wonderful afternoon at the awesome Denver Zoo. (pics to follow) My fave animals-the bears, they have two kodiak bears there. Then we went to our hotel, which btw, my boss was paying for, bc we came to town to go to a work bbq at his home.

After the zoo we went to our hotel and went swimming and then woke up and swam again! What can I say the kids love to swim. And btw, I was showing the kids how you can hold your breath for a really long time and then they wanted to try it. So I showed them how you "O's" load as I call it, (quick deep breathing), then you plug your nose and relax and go under. Well needless to say after only a couple tries, Marlee being the competitor that she is, held her breath for a full 15 seconds with her head completely submerged. I was like, "WOW!" She did great. Later that afternoon, we showed the kids where they were born and the apartment we lived in, in Denver.

We then went to my work BBQ, which was very fun. I was very proud to show off my cute lil family and beautiful wife. I had the cutest kids and wife by far, not even a close second. After the bbq, we drove home, and yes it was very late but I didnt want to miss or shirk my bishopric duties. After getting home very late, unpacking, and me winding down a lil, it was like midnight and Marlee woke up like freaking out about her tummy hurting. (We had all been kinda tummy sick for a couple days) She began dry heaving like no ones business and would just not stop rolling around on the bed and floor and in my arms. She was miserable and was letting the whole world know it too. She just kept saying, "Daddy make my tummy better, it hurts so bad, plz make it stop, make it stop!" We didnt know what to do, She was dry heaving but nothing was there to come out, but she continued for quite some time. I was getting very nervous bc she was in so much pain, rolling and screaming, "make it stop daddy make it stop!" I felt helpless. We felt helpless. I told Katie to call Debi and that I didnt care if it woke up Joni and Jaren. (Sorry guys) Debi told her that we need to be very careful and might have to take her to ER. We thought it might be appendix, but had no idea. Well, I didnt know what to do to make her better but I wanted to desperetly. So I got my oil and put some on her head. I laid my hands on her head and started to annoint...she was rolling and crying and dry heaving...I couldnt think of the words, it took me several tries, it was very stressfull for me. I finally annointed her correctly and then sealed and gave a blessing. Within five minutes she was asleep in my arms and had stopped crying and throwing up. She slept in our bed with Katie and I slept with Sam. She slept all night long and I was very surprised to see katie and the kids all come walking in to church for Sacrament.

I know the Priesthood is the power of God. I am grateful I can use it to bless my family. I am thankful for a caring Father in Heaven who answers a helpless young father's prayers.

Youth Trips are fun!!! (June 27th)

Youth temple trip

I just got back tonight (June 27th) from our Ward's Temple day and also the Youth's Baptisms for the dead trip. Our Temple is Monticello. It is 3 hrs away from our house in GJ.

I was put in charge of organizing the youth to be at the church next door to the temple to be able to babysit for the members attending the session starting at 9am. I don't care, btw, if that was a run on sentence. lol. So, the YM and I decided to go to one of the presidency's cabin in Monticello and stay the night before. So we did. Pretty simple. We hiked, played games, ate, told stories, and had a fantastic testimony mtg to end the night. It was really a great lil trip for us. Unity. We are few in number, but we are strong. Comparatively speaking.

So, Sat morn we woke up at the B*TT crack of dawn and got ready and went to the church next to the temple with all our lil snacks and games and shows to be ready to tend about 25 lil kids. Well, we tent, hahaha thas funny, (like lent you a dollar, but for tend kids.) from 9am to 12pm, whilst the parents all went thru the session. We had about 75 ppl from our ward in the session. Pretty dang good. Then us boys set up the food an tables and drinks for all of us and them to have lunch. We then ate very rapidly only to wait for an hour and a half for the temple to be ready to accommadate us for the baptisms which we had scheduled since 1998 or something. Really it was since January though. So then, finally when we get in, they tell us they dont have any men names to be confirmed for us. Odd. Wierd. I am not complaining, I am just telling the story, Okay! So, they tell us that right after we baptise the boys, they will sit on a chair at the top of the stairs, all soaking wet, and will be confirmed for those exact same names/ppl. I have never before seen or heard of that before, although that seems the right way to do it. Lol. So thats what we did. After I baptised the boys, I stood in the water whilst they were confirmed. Then we drove home after having had a good trip. Small temples, are um, well, unique.

Dan's Fireside (June 29th)

Dan spoke this evening (june 29th) to the Stake youngmen and women. I surprised him and got a babysitter and went and listened. It was the kickoff Fireside to their Youth Conference. He was the main speaker. He spoke for 28 min's and did so good. I knew he would do good, but he surprised me how good he did. I was very proud. The whole chapel was full. He spoke on Christ. Good job Dan. I wanted to go and surprise him to show him how much I love him and want to support him.

Daddy's Official Declaration

Monday morning I woke up and declared, "Today, my children, is Daddy-Family workday!" After the roar of the crowd died down a bit, we packed up our needed supplies and headed for Glenwood Springs. It is a wonderful little tourist spot located about 1hr and 15 min from our home in Grand junction. I quickly completed my needed work and then we headed off to ride the tram to the top of the mountain. While on top we rode the alpine slides, wow were they fast! We then went back down to warm ourselves in the Yampa vapor hot pools. Hmmmm, warm. Here are some pics of our day. Enjoy.

Capoeira Sul da Bahia

What u see is called "Capoeira". It is a martial art from Brasil. The music is a little techno beat mixed with traditional Brasilian capoeira instruments. This video was all shot in the Bahia, that is whree I served my Mission. I used to watch guys do stuff like this all the time. Awesome!

UFC in Denver

Here we are at UFC Fight Night in Denver. Katie and I drove out from Grand Junction to watch the fights. This is the first event here in Colorado since UFC#2 when Royce Gracie dominated. My mom, Gma Roni and my sister Mandy came to watch our kids while we were gone. Thanks again guys, we had the funnest time. We went shopping, went out to eat, went swimming, sat in the hot tub and of course spent most of Wednesday at the fights.

We saw lots of famous ppl, (famous in the jiu jitsu / mma world). We saw Dana White, Rampage jackson, Matt hughes, Al Roker, Joe Rogan, Eddie Bravo, the Tapout boys, Frank Mir, Diego Sanchez, Anthony johnson, Forrest Griffin and Jay Cutler, the Broncos QB. They were all there just watching except for Anthony. He faught Tommy Speer and knocked him out cold in the first round. I took my picture with him, below. That was cool. He is from Denver. I saw alot of those guys up close. I was using the urinal right next to Eddie Bravo. LOL. Katie said did you look over and say hi? My reply, "No, I did not want to get tapped out in a urinal with my pants down by Eddie Bravo!" LOL.

We saw Kenny Florian vs Joe Lauzon, Matt Hamil vs Tim Boetsch, Din Thomas vs Josh Neer, Clay Guida vs anon, Frank Edgar vs Gray Maynard, James Irvin vs Houston Alexander, Manny gambuirian vs. anon, Thiago alves vs Karo Parysian, Anthony Johnson vs Tommy Speer. My fave fight was Nate Diaz vs Kurt "batman" pelligrino. It was a jiujitsu war but Nate tapped him out with a triangle choke in the 2nd round. It was awesome!!!

This is video of the main event: Kenny "KenFlo" Florian vs Joe Lauzon. 155lb weight class. Kenny won by tapout in the 2nd round. It was a great fight.

Well buckaroo, I had a hankerin for a new Cowboy hat. My Son, Sam (That's a good cowboy name) been wantin me to fetch a new hat since the cows had come home so I figured it was time. We strapt on our ole cowkickers and hats, fixed our buckles, (for real) and set off for the park with Momma and the girls. Momma grabbed that new fangled telefoto lens and put it in her napsack as we cleared the pasture. I must say, I'll have to load the scatter gun to keep the cowpokes (boys) away from my lil Marlee, she's quite the looker. Anywho, heres a few of the telefotos that we took at the park. While I am not ready to wear boots everyday, I do admit to loving a good western. John Wayne is a hero of mine. I grew up watching him: She wore a yellow ribbon, True Grit, The Searchers, The Cowboys, to name a few. My Son sure makes a handsome cowboy, and people tell him that where ever he goes too. Now my daughter Marlee, well, you already heard me talking 'bout the scatter gun. We had a fun afternoon.

These are some pics of us coloring our Paschal eggs, (if you read my last post, you know what I mean). We all had a lot of fun and have enjoyed egg sandwiches for days now. Katie taught her Sunbeam lesson that Sunday and in her lesson, the kids got to hunt for eggs. Well, the eggs were empty and that signified the Risen Lord not being in the tomb. The kids just wondered where the candy was... I don't think they got it. Good try Honey, I liked the lesson. We had a good Easter.

Our Roadtrip silly list

The distance between Grand Junction Colorado and Disneyland is exactly 773 miles. Thats pretty far and we saw some cool and some silly things. This list is a compilation of a few of those things: (not in any particular order)

Just after Green River UT, there is a crazy rock formation (big too) that looks so out of place. It looks like rolling lava that just froze, but its made of white rock?
Cedar City UT claims to be the Shakespearean capital of the US?..Weird.
We saw the tallest thermometer in the world, 100ft tall! (Baker, CA)
Gateway to Death Valley- Which is 282 ft below sea level & can get into the *130's temp.
We passed a group of about 25 "Hells Angels" motorcyclists, and noticed they were all Chinese!
We ate at "In and Out", a very popular burger joint that only has 3 things on the menu.
At the Sand Dunes in St. George with Eardley fam, Lizzie would rub her face right in the sand. She thought it was so soft.
There is an abandoned water slide park in the middle of the desert in California. What was that person thinking?
How bout the hotels in Vegas...A huge black pyramid? A bunch of sky scrapers that are connected? A huge castle? A bunch of stone looking columns?

Disneyland!!!

We had been waiting for Disneyland for a very long time now. We finally arrived and were so excited. We met Grandma debi, Grandpa Greg and Aunt Millie here and were so excited to share it with them. It was wonderful to have them there. The weather was perfect, 78* and sunny. We had SO much fun, but got a little scared, oddly enuf, in the kids rides. Too dark for Sam and Marlee. Nonetheless, it was wonderful. We even did the night time parade. Marlee really loved all the princesses. It was somthing special to be able to have the twins 4 yr old Birthday party at Disneyland. What a cool thing! My fave ride- Soaring over Cali, Katie- Splash Mtn, Marlee- Teacups, Samuel- Splash mtn, Lizzie- Billy hill and the hillbillies. Lol. Here are some of our fave pics. I will post a slideshow in my next post. Goodbye Mickey, we love you.

As the prior post alluded to, we spent the twins Birthdays in California! On the way there, we stopped off at Kyle and Sunee's house in St. George. My kids all love it there! So fun kids to play with and plenty of nice weather. While there, we went to some cool sand dunes and hiking areas in Snow Canyon. Here are some pics of our adventure.

Leap Year

Tomorrow is leap year day, or however you say that. What a weird quirky day if you really think about it. If my twins, Samuel and Marlee would have been born 5 days earlier then they were, then leap year would be their first Birthday. Lol, that is funny. Actually, if you really want to get crazy, then, think about this: Samuel, Marlee and lizzie are actually the same age, they just have different birthdays. With the focus on BIRTH. They were all "created" so to speak on the same day back in 2003. We have pictures to prove it too, although, we do not know which one is which at that point. LOL. Poor Lizzie was alive and doing well in her pietry dish and then BAm, they sucked all the H2o out of her and replaced it with Nitrogen and kept her frozen for three years. Lets just say, I'm glad I don't have to pay the clinic the $350 a year child support it took to keep her frozen in that icy tube. I am so grateful for each one of them. I love each one of them dearly and am so grateful for modern medicine and a loving Heavenly Father who hears and answers prayers. My next post will be from Disneyland, celebrating the Twins Birthdays.

Why do we do crazy things? Why do we push ourselves? Why would anyone in their right mind go atop a 10,000 ft mountain, one which the Utes called "Thunder Mountain", in the middle of winter and camp? Why? Why would anyone shovel snow for five straight hours, in a place that is constantly snowing and has a 12 ft snow base? ..And by the way would snow for another 24hrs straight. Finally, why would anyone then sleep in the snow that they had been shoveling for those many hours?

Because we can, that's why! To see if were alive, that's why!

...and that's exactly what we did. We went up to the what the Spanish called "Mesa Grande", a 10,000 ft mountain that has over 300 lakes, has had 8,000 yrs of habitation and is the largest flattop mountain in the world. And we did this in February. Without tents. With our shovels and a dream. Because we can.

This pic is of the sign, "Mesa Lakes" being covered by the drifting snow. Just to show you how deep the snow is. Now do you believe me?

The following is a series of photos taken while constructing our "snow cave." And yes, we did sleep in it that very night, the three of us; Me (Dan) and my buddies Mike Bench and Sean Buddeke. While the temperature outside was a snowy/windy 16*, it was a comfortable 35* inside our enclosed cave.

1. We picked our spot, a nice solid snow bank with the face out of the wind.

2. We began digging out the hallway and entranceway.

3. Slowly excavating a ton of snow! After the initial opening, we started the main room.

4. The main room was a big dome in this case. We would be sleeping 3. We made 3 bunks with what we call a "cold air trench" going down the middle. This lets the cold air settle below us.

5. We made several air holes using a ski pole and then finished off the inside. Then, we sealed off the door using masonry snow as shown below. And let it set up for several hours. In the pic of me below, you can hardly tell there is a huge snow cave directly behind me.

6. After the set up period, we re-carved our new smaller doorway and then got in to escape the snow and wind.

We worked very hard and were very proud of our labors. And there you have...our snow cave.

Well, this morning I am going up to the top of the largest "flat topped" mountain in the world, the Grand Mesa. It is right next to Grand junction. That is where we are having our scout klondike. We are going up this morning to build the snow caves we are going to sleep in. I will have pics up in a few days. It should be very fun and the weather is calling for snow!!! hehe. See you soon.

Pre-B-Day party for the twins

Last Saturday (Feb. 16th) we had a Pre-Birthday party for the twins. As you know, they will be turning "4" on March Fourth. This year they wanted to have a friend party so badly. We have never really had a party for them before, just lil family stuff and this year we are taking them to Disneyland!!! (BTW- they are so excited they can't stand it.) Anyhow, we will be gone on their actual birthdays so we decided to throw them a friend party a lil early.

We played fun games and opened presents.....

Dallas, Texas

A more accurate title might be: The inside of a hotel in Dallas. So last week I made my way, for the first time, to the LoneStar state. Very flat- my first impression. In truth, I did want to go spend some time seeing some of the cool things in Dallas, but I was there for a business meeting.

One of the coolest things to me, was seeing the place where JFK was assasinated. I sat at "the grassy knoll" and near the "book depository" and I couldn't help but feel the history of the place. Everyone knows the scene I am refferring to. JFK riding next to his wife Jaquelyn in the back of the convertible. It was very strange, as I said, I could "feel" the history of the place. It was a simple street, a simple piece of grass and a simple building. History.

Besides the JFK impression, we did many other fun things. (I won't bore you with the work portion) We had Scott Bloom (a comedian from VH1) come perform and entertain us. He was hillarious! He did a polyglot bit and also a pyschic act. Very very funny. Scott, "I feel connected with you, tell me, what is the name of the 15th century Japanese poet I am thinking of?" The lady's reply, "I don't know!" Scott, "Did you just say Yamagishi Idohknow? That's exactly who I was thinking of, amazing." It was so funny, it was very spur of the moment.

We also had a juggling act come and perform for us. "The passing act" They have won several TV competitions and are known worldwide. They were also very funny and very talented. The most amazing thing they did was, now picture this in your mind: One guy standing on the other guy's shoulders, balancing, then that guy standing on a board, that was balancing on a ball, and then they juggled swords to eachother. It was absolutely crazy. They only did that one for like 15 seconds, but still, insane. The funniest part was, they did that whilst wearing blindfolds, now they didn't have the blindfolds over their eyes, but they were wearing them...LOL around their necks. LOL. It was really cool.

Another cool thing was a "team building" event that we had. We were all (1150) brought into a room and told that we were going to build bikes. We were like okay... So then we broke into groups of five and starting building our bikes from these lil kits. When we finished, they said, everyone close their eyes and they brought in 225 eight year old orphans. At this point, we all figured out what was going on. Then the kids came to each group and gave us all a thank you card and picked up the bikes. People were crying and so happy and it was really cool. It was all about serving others. For some ppl, (out of our church) this was their first time serving anyone, maybe ever. My company paid for all of it. I work for a great company. We also went to "The House of Blues" and had Jim Bilushi perform live for us. He was really good. Quite the entertainer. Anyhow, I thought I'd just share some of the fun things that I did, while in the Republic of Texas.

A few thoughts.

First of all, I can't believe that it is already February. Time is going by so fast it seems. Stalee, on her blog noted that her lil girl Kamree is growing up so fast, she is five now! My little Lizzie is a little jitterbug of acitvity. She, also, is growing up too fast. I can't believe my baby is walking and talking. The twins are almost 4!!! I thought they would never come and now they are almost 4.

Speaking on this topic, I am 30 years old. I am a young man. Last Sunday I was put into my second Bishopric. I am again the second counselor, (which I love). I was only in the previous Bishopric for 5 months, then we got a new Bishop and therefore Bishopric. While I am grateful not to be the Bishop. I am also very grateful to be called as one of his counselors. I love to serve the members of our ward and I am greateful for the trust that I have been given. I try to use each one of my talents in a way that would make the Lord pleased with me.

Today, I watched President Hinckley's Funeral. He died a week ago tomorrow. He was 97. I know that I have already posted some info regarding this, but I wanted to add just a few tidbits of information that I gleaned from the speakers today.

Temples grew from 47 to 135 -working or under construction. Amazing!!!
The church donated over $600 Million dollars in humanitarian aid Worldwide
The Perpetual Education Fund was started and continues
We received the "Proclamation to the Family"
1/3 of the current 13 Million members became such while he was President
Over 600,000 missionaries have served during his tenure
He was married for over 62 years.
He gave us the state of the art, 21,000 seat Church Convention Center
He received the "Medal of Freedom" our nations highest civic award
All of this, while Gordon B. Hinckley as President of the Church

But most importantly, he gave us vision, enthusiasm, strength, service, compassion and his testimony that the Savior lives! I am greatful for his example and life. He was a humble man. Thank you President Hinckley for your 97 years of service and dedication. You have inspired us all.

Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai

Here is some video that Katie took of me and the twins practicing jiu jitsu and muay thai at home. We are using our grappling dummy named "big red." This guy "big red" is 75 pounds and is hard like a punching bag. He is ideal for practicing takedowns, kicks, punches, throws, ground and pound and jiu jitsu. He is pretty hard and very durable. Kyle, you wanted to see Big Red, here ya go. Hahaha.

As you can see from the twins videos, they know exactly how to perform a little ground and pound to soften up the opponent and then apply a tight "armbar" to force them into submission. "Tap or Snap" is how the saying goes. LoL. Anybody want to get froggy in pre-school?

Very good exercise, really toughens up your shins, self defense and lots of fun. What more could you ask for? Anybody want to spar?

Shooting in St. George

As you know from a previous post, we went to St. George Utah about a week ago. While there, Kyle, James, Jeff and Myself (Dan) went out to the desert to do a little shooting. I took my small arsenal and Kyle brought his Dad's .22. We had a great time showing the boys how to shoot, be safe and in general, blow the tar outta clay pigeons! Is that "redneck" enough for ya? Running inspired

On the drive home from St. George and the "halfy" Katie and I were both really excited and decided together that we wanted to start running. With our schedule and our 3 kids we don't know how we can do it together, but we are going to do it.

So, first thing Monday morning, I went and ran 2 miles and then Katie went and ran 2 miles. We both felt great and continued to feel inspired. I was especially feeling good bc I have battled serious shin splints for a few yrs now. So, ahhhhh, this morning I wake up and my right leg is "killing" me. Right above my achilles and right below my calf in the back. Now I am so scared bc I REALLY want to run so badly. Maybe I just started too fast, too far, I dunno. I have been icing it like crazy, trying to heal quick. Sunee, remember when I said that some ppl just arent runners? I am hoping its not me. UGGG! In the meantime, go Katie!!!

Half Marathon!

So this weekend, katie said that Stalee and Sunee (and kyle) were running the St. George Half Marathon and that she really wanted to go but knew that we couldn't. It made her really sad because I know that whe wanted to be there to support them, so I said, I'll take off Friday and we will just go!!! Well, thats exactly what we did. We had the funnest time. We played video games, (as you could see by the prior post) we talked and played and had the funnest time just hanging out. But there was this little thing called the half marathon, lol. I took some amateur video of Sunee and Stae crossing the finish line in 2hrs and 4 minutes (below). They did awesome. Kyle was so fast that we did not get to see him cross. Sorry speedster, I mean Kyle. One of my fave things was while they were running the race, Stalee said, "I'm so tired, I really need to walk a little" and Sunee's reply, "You don't run half a marathon and NOT get tired, cmon!"

Great job guys, thanks for being gracious hosts and inspiring us to be the best we can!!!

Daddy family work day

Well, we woke up Monday morning and Katie looked at me and said, "Daddy, today is daddy-family work day, and we are coming with you!" What is a Daddy supposed to do when he hears that? I'll tell you- Plan a really fun day!!!! So we did. We drove to Glenwood Springs, (about an hour 15 min drive into the mts) got pizza at my fave lil mom-n-pop pizza shop and then I dropped them all of at Target so they could walk around and look at toys (and buy Marlee some underwear, which is a different post) so that I could hurry up and hit my accounts. A lil while later I came back and picked them all up and we were off to play.

If you know my kids at all, you know that they LOVE to swim, (Lizzie included) and so we went swimming in an outdoor pool in 20 degree weather in the mountains of Colorado. You might say that were crazy, but the pool is an ancient hot springs pool, that is 104 temp year round! Actually, there are two pools, 104 and 90 degrees. In the summer there is a waterslide running. It was absolutely beautiful, lots and lots of steam, blue skies, snowy mountians and my family. It was a very fun Daddy-family work day. :) Here are some pics.

Apostle urges students to use new media

LAIE, Hawaii 15 December 2007 Two hundred graduating students at Brigham Young University-Hawaii were urged today to use the Internet — including blogs and other forms of “new media” — to contribute to a national conversation about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Elder M. Russell Ballard, an apostle in the Church, told the mostly Mormon student body that conversations about the Church would take place whether or not Church members decided to participate in them.

“We cannot stand on the sidelines while others, including our critics, attempt to define what the Church teaches,” he said.
“While some conversations have audiences in the thousands or even millions, most are much, much smaller. But all conversations have an impact on those who participate in them. Perceptions of the Church are established one conversation at a time.”
Church leaders have publicly expressed concern that while much of the recent extensive news reporting on the Church has been balanced and accurate, some has been trivial, distorted or without context.
Elder Ballard said there were too many conversations going on about the Church for Church representatives to respond to each individually, and that Church leaders “can’t answer every question, satisfy every inquiry and respond to every inaccuracy that exists.”
He said students should consider sharing their views on blogs, responding to online news reports and using the “new media” in other ways.
But he cautioned against arguing with others about their beliefs. “There is no need to become defensive or belligerent,” he said. Please go to LDS.org for more information.

Merry Christmas and now you say happy New Year I guess. After speaking in sacrament at my first Christmas as a member of the Bishopric we hit the road for Hooper! This year was our first Christmas as a family of Five and it was wonderful. It was fun, it was busy, it was all that it could have been and more. We got to spend time with both sides of our families and enjoy visiting and games at family parties. Sam got the Transformers he so desperatly wanted and Marlee got the Care-a-bear and cabbage patch kid that she had hers eyes set on. Katie got the labtop, (that Iam actually typing on right now) and I got some Brazilian jiu jitsu training gear. (Like a muay thai bag) Lizzie got some fun toys and as is typical with young-ens, she loves the boxes they came in. Lol. Greg and Debi, (Katies parents) have been so gracious and let us stay here again. Thank you. It's so fun to give and get gifts and presents, I truly love this time of year. Friends and family are all that you really need. We love you all so much.

...That is the question. It's one of those things that when you think about at first, you say to yourself, "Yeah, yeah, I'm important, I want a website, yeah yeah." But, then after you spend like an hour and you only have a template, a color, a font and 3 pics put on, then you think, "Geez, getting your blog going is like trying to wipe off all the little dimples on a golf ball!" Actually, the creative side in me really wants to do it. It has been a long time since I have drawn a really good picture. Several years in fact. Did I mention that I have 3 kids, all 3 yrs or under? And so creating a blog, and keeping up with it I guess, is another way to be creative. This only because my wife, (Whom I love and adore) threw away all of "our", yes "our", scrapbooking materials. One word, "ebay" honey, ebay. Anywho, it appears all systems are go and I am giving myself the green light. This is my first post. BIG D
